Emission characteristics of gadolinium ions (Gd) in water are studied to estimate the effect of ion emission on the water Cherenkov detector. The excitation spectrum of Gd was measured in the wavelength range of 245-255 nm, and it was confirmed that the ion emission intensity was proportional to the Gd concentration.

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency is working on the research and development of an accelerator-driven nuclear transmutation system (ADS) for transmuting minor actinides. This system is a combination of a subcritical nuclear reactor and a high-power superconducting proton linear accelerator (JADS-linac). One of the challenges in developing the JADS-linac is to reduce beam trips. In order to develop the JADS-linac to satisfy beam trip conditions that ensure the integrity of the subcritical core, it is necessary to estimate the beam trip frequency of the JADS-linac. In this study, a Monte Carlo program using a survival function based on the operational data of the linear accelerator (linac) of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex was developed to facilitate this estimation. The result shows that beam trip frequency with a duration exceeding five minutes must be reduced to about one-fifth to satisfy the beam trip conditions.
